Manufactum opens new department store in Vienna

On Wednesday, our client Manufactum opened its first Austrian department store in the 1st district of Vienna, Am Hof 3 – 4. Located inside the historical building of the Oesterreichische Kontrollbank, the two-storey area provides products from the fields of fashion, furniture and home textiles as well as kitchen and garden equipment or body care. Attached to the department store visitors find a café with a so called “Schanigarten” where one can buy coffee specialties and baked goods from the in-house bakery. Schwitzke & Partner developed the store as well as the gastronomy design and took over the construction supervision for the first foreign location of Manufactum.

The store’s design concept is based on the idea to maintain the historical substance of the building as far as possible. “We wanted to keep the spacial reference to the City of Vienna and to let the materials transport this unique atmosphere”, says Tina Jokisch, Managing Director of Schwitzke & Partner. “Further, the challenge in terms of the design was to unite the department store as well as the café area atmospherically under the same roof.”

Therefore, traditional cast-iron columns could be maintained to preserve the historical character within the building. The wall coverings of the café area are made of elegant cherry wood, green quilted leather benches as well as subtle brass details set detectable quotes to Viennese Coffeehouse Culture.
