The wall cladding of the staircases to the subway at Bonn's main train station was comprehensively and artistically redesigned according to a design by the artist duo Heike Weber and Walter Eul.
We realized the implementation of the artistic vision together with the Bonn lighting planning office LKL. Fine stoneware was used for the walls and mesh-like expanded metal for the ceiling. The walls were decorated with printed glass, which was printed with elaborate technology according to the artistic design. We closely involved the artists in the implementation because the color in particular – which is fundamental to the artistic idea – was to look exactly the same on the walls in the end as it did in the design drawing, using printing technology and airbrushing.
The focus of the project for us was the ideal combination of all artistic requirements with the technical conditions. The subway stopped for only 72 hours during the nine-month renovation phase – under strict safety measures, the total of nine stairways at Bonn's main station were renovated while the train was still in operation.
