Art in architecture: Bonn subway station Maximilian Center
Bonn was faced with the task of not earmarking the subway entrances that lead to the beautiful city center, but rather designing them in an unusual way.
Based on the design concept developed by CROSS Architecture for the subway entrances and exits at Bonn Central Station and the entire concourse level, we took over the execution and implementation services for one of the entrances after completion of service phase 5. The wall cladding of the stairwells was completely redesigned according to a concept by the artist duo Heike Weber and Walter Eul. The implementation of the artistic intervention was carried out in close collaboration with the Bonn-based lighting design firm LKL.
The redesign is characterized by a clear choice of materials: porcelain stoneware defines the wall surfaces, while printed glass elements translate the artistic design into built reality using precise printing and airbrush techniques. The artists closely oversaw the implementation to ensure the precise realization of the color effect as a central design element.
This created a public space that anchors art as an integral part of architecture in the everyday lives of Bonn’s residents.
