Renovation of a historic villa in Meerbusch
Düsseldorf, September 2024
Schwitzke Partner has successfully completed the conversion of a historic villa in Meerbusch. The villa was designed in 1912 by the renowned architect Fritz August Breuhaus de Groot for the actor Paul Henckels and stands on a spacious 1,500 square meter plot in the garden city of Meererbusch. The building itself offers a living space of 350 square meters. Originally only the ground floor was inhabited, but the upper floor has also been used since the 1920s.
A special feature of the symmetrical building is the square floor plan with a side length of 15 by 15 meters, which has been preserved to this day. However, as part of the comprehensive modernization, the villa underwent significant adjustments. It was particularly important to the clients to create both more light and room height, while preserving as much of the historical building fabric as possible. On the garden side, a narrow dormer bay window was replaced by a large dormer window with floor-to-ceiling windows and an exit to provide the upper floor with more daylight. In addition, the ceiling of the upper floor was raised by 50 centimeters. On the ground floor, the suspended ceiling was removed and the original ceiling construction was exposed, creating a more spacious feeling.
A special highlight of the house is the historic, octagonal hallway, which was structurally changed in the 1950s to create a larger living room and therefore no longer exists in its original state. However, during the renovation, the interior designers revisited the octagon in details such as door handles and tiles. The conversion harmoniously combines the historic country house architecture with the demands of modern living.
