Conversion of a historic villa in Meerbusch

The villa was designed in 1912 by the renowned architect Fritz August Breuhaus de Groot for the actor Paul Henckels and stands on a spacious 1,500 square meter plot in the garden city of Meerbusch. The building itself offers 350 square meters of living space. Originally, only the first floor was inhabited, but the upper floor has also been used since the 1920s. A special feature of the symmetrical building is the square floor plan with sides measuring 15 by 15 meters, which has been preserved to this day. However, the villa underwent significant modifications as part of the extensive modernization. For example, a narrow dormer bay window on the garden side was replaced by a large dormer with floor-to-ceiling windows and an exit to provide the upper floor with more daylight. In addition, the ceiling of the upper floor was raised by 50 centimetres. On the first floor, the suspended ceiling was removed and the original ceiling construction was exposed, creating a more spacious feel.
A particular highlight of the house is the historic, octagonal hallway, which was structurally altered in the 1950s in favor of a larger living room and therefore no longer exists in its original state. In the course of the renovation, however, we as interior designers reintroduced the octagon in details such as door handles and tiles. The renovation thus harmoniously combines the historic country house architecture with the demands of modern living.
